Finding Confidence Through Dance: Lily’s Journey

Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Lily who loved to dance. She had a dream to become a professional dancer.

However, as Lily grew up, she began to feel uncomfortable about her body. She thought she wasn’t thin enough, tall enough, or flexible enough to become a professional dancer. She stopped dancing altogether.

Years passed, and Lily got more and more unhappy. One day, she came acroos a dancing class for adults and decided to try again. As soon as she started moving under music, all her worries disappeared. She remembered how much she loved dancing and how it made her feel alive.

From now on, Lily started to take dancing lessons regularly and even performed in a local show. She realized that her body was the only means to express herself . And she inspired others to follow her example, no matter what obstacles they might face.

SOLUTIONS TO POVERTY

1. ELIMINATING POVERTY THROUGH EQUITY

One of the main causes of poverty is inequality. The systemic barriers that lead to groups of people going without representation in their communities leaves them further behind in terms of resources and opportunity. One of the biggest inequalities we need to address is gender inequality.

2. REDUCING POVERTY WITH RESILIENCE

Poverty happens when a high amount of inequality meets a high amount of risk.

3. COMMIT TO CLIMATE CHANGE SOLUTIONS AND CLIMATE JUSTICE

Resilience against climate change is especially important and deserves its own mention. According to the World Bank, climate change could force an additional 100 million people into extreme poverty over the next decade without any urgent action taken.

4. ERADICATING POVERTY THROUGH EDUCATION

According to UNESCO, if all students in low-income countries had just basic reading and writing skills (nothing else), an estimated 171 million people could escape extreme poverty. If all adults completed secondary education, we could cut the global poverty rate by more than half.

5. HALTING POVERTY BY ENDING HUNGER (AND THIRST)

Simply eating three meals a day and getting a healthy amount of calories and nutrients can go a long way to breaking the cycle of poverty. When a person doesn’t have enough to eat, they lack the strength and energy needed to work. Contaminated water can lead to debilitating illnesses.

“Anne Franks’ Diary”

Summary

Anne’s diary begins on her thirteenth birthday, June 12, 1942, and ends shortly after her fifteenth. At the start of her diary, Anne describes fairly typical girlhood experiences, writing about her friendships with other girls, her crushes on boys, and her academic performance at school. Because anti-Semitic laws forced Jews into separate schools, Anne and her older sister, Margot, attended the Jewish Lyceum in Amsterdam.

The Franks had moved to the Netherlands in the years leading up to World War II to escape persecution in Germany. After the Germans invaded the Netherlands in 1940, the Franks were forced into hiding. With another family, Mr. Dussel, they moved into a small secret annex above Otto Frank’s office where they had had food and supplies. The employees from Otto’s firm helped hide the Franks and kept them supplied with food, medicine, and information about the outside world.

The diary ends on the first of August, 1944 abruptly when it seems that some mole has informed the Nazis, leading to their arrest. Later when Miep recovers the diary, Otto Frank, the only survivor, decides to arrange its publication causing a worldwide uproar about the Holocaust and senseless brutality of the Nazis as per Anne’s wishes.

The diary presents the struggle of the young girl about that inexplicable phenomenon of the senseless oppression at the hands of the Germans, her own compatriots, though religiously different.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Part 1

The film begins with a summary of the prehistory of the ring of power. Long ago, twenty rings existed: three for elves, seven for dwarves, nine for men, and one made by the Dark Lord Sauron, in Mordor, which would rule all the others. Sauron poured all his evil and his will to dominate into this ring. An alliance of elves and humans resisted Sauron’s ring and fought against Mordor. They won the battle and the ring fell to Isildur, the son of the king of Gondor, but just as he was about to destroy the ring in Mount Doom, he changed his mind and held on to it for himself. Later he was killed, and the ring fell to the bottom of the sea. The creature Gollum discovered it and brought it to his cave. Then he lost it to the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

The movie cuts to an image of the hobbits’ peaceful Shire years later, where the wizard Gandalf has come to celebrate Bilbo’s 111th birthday. The party is an extravagant occasion with fireworks and revelry, and Bilbo entertains children with tales of his adventures. In the middle of a rambling speech, however, he puts on the ring, which makes him invisible, and runs to his house to pack his things and leave the Shire. Gandalf meets Bilbo back in his house and tells him he must give up the ring. Eventually Bilbo agrees to entrust it to his nephew Frodo. Gandalf senses that the ring is gaining power over Bilbo. We see a flash of Mordor, and hooded horsemen, the ringwraiths, leave its gates. The scene shifts to Gandalf, who rushes to a library to sift through ancient scrolls. As the ringwraiths begin to close in on Bilbo’s house, Gandalf returns to Frodo and throws the ring into Bilbo’s hearth. Mysterious letters appear on the ring’s surface. Only then does Gandalf realize that this ring is actually Sauron’s ring. Gandalf explains to Frodo that the ring and Sauron are one. He longs to find it, and it longs to find him. Gandalf has learned that Sauron has kidnapped Gollum and that Gollum has revealed that Bilbo has the ring. The ring must leave the Shire or it will endanger all the hobbits. Gandalf cannot take it himself, since as a wizard he will wield too much power with the ring. He determines that Frodo must take it. Gandalf explains that if Frodo puts on the ring, it will draw Sauron’s agents to it. Suddenly, Gandalf discovers that Frodo’s friend Sam has been hiding outside and listening to Gandalf and Frodo. At first, Gandalf is furious at Sam’s eavesdropping, but then he recruits Sam to be Frodo’s travel partner and protector.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Part 2

As Frodo and Sam leave, a band of orcs captures Merry and Pippin and kills Boromir. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli decide to let the Ringbearer go and instead rescue Merry and Pippin. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli pursue the orcs as they run across the fields of Rohan toward Saruman’s fortress at Isengard. They find evidence that the orcs of Sauron and Saruman have quarreled and that either one hobbit is still alive, but they begin to lose hope as they fall farther and farther behind. After three days of running with little rest, they meet a troop of the riders of Rohan. The horsemen’s leader, Éomer, informs the trio that the orcs were destroyed on the edge of Fangorn forest, with no survivors. He lends them horses to continue the pursuit, but offers little hope that the hobbits escaped the battle.

Although treated roughly by the orcs, Merry and Pippin remain unharmed. When the Rohirrim attack, the hobbits run to the safety of the forest. They eventually make their way through the dense woodland to a stony hill where they meet Treebeard the Ent. This ancient being looks like a walking and talking tree and is the guardian of the forest. He does not particularly care about Sauron, but he takes the threat of Saruman very seriously. The wizard once cared for the forest and learned much from Treebeard, but now he chops down the trees to fuel the war machines of Isengard. Treebeard calls an Entmoot, a meeting of many Ents who decide to fight Saruman.

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli find the remains of the orcs at the edge of Fangorn and follow the hobbits’ tracks into the forest. They meet a white-robed wizard under the trees whom they at first take to be Saruman, but he reveals himself as Gandalf returned. When he fell in Moria he continued to fight the Balrog and eventually overcame him. The ordeal changed him, and he has returned in white to signify that he is now the head of the wizard’s council. Gandalf takes the three remaining members of the Fellowship to Edoras, Rohan’s capital, to counter the evil influence of Saruman. King Théoden has listened to the evil counsels of Wormtongue, Saruman’s spy, succumbing to old age and despair. Gandalf rouses him from his stupor and reveals Wormtongue’s treachery. Éowyn, Théoden’s niece and Éomer’s sister, admires Aragorn. Théoden then musters his army and leads them to the fortress of Helm’s Deep. The Rohirrim defeat Saruman’s enormous army, although they suffer many losses. Unexpectedly, a great forest of trees appears in the valley and destroys all the orcs that try to escape.

After the battle at Helm’s Deep, Gandalf takes Théoden and his companions to Isengard. Where they had expected to find a wizard’s stronghold, they find ruins. Merry and Pippin, left to wait at the gate, explain that the Ents have destroyed Isengard, although Saruman himself remains hidden in the impenetrable tower of Orthanc. Gandalf speaks to the fallen wizard, offering him a chance to repent. When Saruman refuses, Gandalf breaks his staff. Wormtongue, perhaps trying to hit Saruman, throws a crystal ball out the window. Later that night, Pippin sneaks a look into the stone and encounters Sauron himself. Fortunately, Gandalf breaks the contact before the hobbit has a chance to reveal Frodo’s quest to destroy the Ring.

Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam have become lost among the pathless hills of the Emyn Muil. They realize that Gollum is following them and manage to capture the corrupt creature. Despite Sam’s misgivings, Frodo bargains with Gollum for guidance to the Black Gate of Mordor. Gollum agrees and leads them out of the hills and through the Dead Marshes, a haunted swamp. When they reach the Black Gate, Frodo and Sam despair of passing the constant guard but resolve to make the attempt. Gollum, however, begs them to take another way — a secret passage that only he knows. Desperate, Frodo agrees, and they turn aside from the gate.

Traveling toward the pass of Cirith Ungol, the hobbits discover a surprisingly pleasant countryside. When they pause for a stewed rabbit dinner, however, they find themselves in the middle of a battle between an army journeying to Mordor and a company of Gondorian men. Gollum sneaks off, but the hobbits are captured by the men. The Gondorians lead them to a secret base, where they learn that the men’s captain is Faramir, Boromir’s younger brother. Faramir realizes their quest and their burden, but he does not attempt to take the Ring from Frodo. With Frodo’s help, he does capture Gollum, an action that breaks the fragile trust that had begun to form between the two Ringbearers. Faramir advises the travelers against the path they have chosen, but he can suggest no alternative ways into Mordor.

After leaving Faramir, the hobbits make their way past Minas Morgul, the home of the Black Riders. They take a hidden path into the mountains behind the fortress, a path made of steep staircases and tunnels bored through the rock. At the top of the stairs, the hobbits find themselves in a reeking tunnel clogged with tough webs. This is the lair of Shelob, a giant evil spider with an insatiable appetite. Gollum hopes to recover the Ring from the remains of Frodo and Sam, after Shelob has eaten them. With the aid of Galadriel’s gift, a phial containing the pure light of elven stars, they escape Shelob’s tunnel, but she attacks again from another angle and stings Frodo. Sam drives her from Frodo’s fallen body, but he finds his master cold and lifeless. Nearly incapacitated by grief, Sam forces himself take the Ring from Frodo and continue the quest.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Part 3

To keep Pippin out of further trouble, Gandalf rides with him to Minas Tirith, the city that Sauron’s armies will soon besiege. They meet with Boromir’s father Denethor, the Ruling Steward of Gondor, and in gratitude for Boromir’s sacrifice (saving them from the orcs at Parth Galen), Pippin pledges his service to the steward as a Guard of the White Tower. Denethor does not trust Gandalf, and he knows that the wizard has brought Aragorn to reclaim the throne. Faramir returns to the city, wearied from fighting, and reports his encounter with Frodo. Angry that his son did not bring the Ring to Gondor, Denethor sends the exhausted captain back into the field to lead a rearguard action against the oncoming army. When they make their last dash for the safety of the gates, Gandalf rides out to defend them from the flying Nazgûl, but Faramir falls at the gates.

The Riders of Rohan muster their forces, preparing to ride to the aid of Minas Tirith, and Merry strikes up a friendship with Théoden. Aragorn realizes that he must take the Paths of the Dead if he is to reach Minas Tirith in time to lift the siege. He takes the evil road with Legolas, Gimli, and the Dúnedain (a group of Rangers) who have joined him from the North, but the Rohirrim are convinced that he has gone to his own death. Théoden leaves behind Merry and his niece Éowyn, claiming that neither can help in the battle, but a young rider offers to carry Merry. With the aid of a strange tribesman, the Rohirrim find a forgotten road and arrive just in time to surprise the besieging army at Minas Tirith.

Although small in number, the Riders of Rohan sweep across the battlefield. Then the Witchking (the most powerful Nazgûl) kills Théoden, and their charge is stopped. The rider who brought Merry to the battle reveals herself as Éowyn, and with Merry’s help she slays the Enemy’s greatest servant. The hopes of the city are dashed when a fleet of dark ships appears on the river, but the lead ship unfurls a banner bearing the insignia of the True King: Aragorn has arrived from the Paths of the Dead. He used his authority as the True King to call the dead themselves into battle, and they destroyed a second army that had been approaching from the river.

Inside the city, Denethor descends into madness as he watches the plight of his city and the deadly illness of Faramir. Convinced that all is lost, he orders Faramir’s body carried into the mausoleum, where he plans to burn himself and his son alive. Pippin manages to find Gandalf, who saves Faramir from his father’s madness, but Gandalf cannot prevent Denethor’s own suicide. Faramir is taken to the Houses of Healing, as are Éowyn and Merry, and Aragorn enters the city to tend to their illness. The ability to heal is a sign of the True King, and Ioreth, one of the women in the House, recognizes Aragorn’s right to the throne.

Although the battle for Minas Tirith has been won, the only true victory lies with Frodo’s quest. To distract Sauron from any attempt to reach Mount Doom, Aragorn leads the remaining armies of the West to the Black Gate. When they arrive, a herald from Mordor shows them Frodo’s mailshirt in an attempt to make them lose heart, but the attempt at misdirection shows them that Sauron does not yet have the Ring. An enormous army attacks, and Aragorn’s armies are slowly overwhelmed.

Back in Shelob’s tunnel, after taking the Ring, Sam hears a party of orcs approaching and hides from them. They find Frodo’s body, and Sam learns from their conversation that Frodo is only unconscious, not dead. He rescues Frodo from the orc tower, and they begin the final stage of the journey across the desert wasteland of Mordor itself. They move slowly, hampered by thirst and the almost unbearable burden of the Ring itself, not to mention the necessity of avoiding the armies of orcs swarming the countryside. After a long struggle, they reach the slopes of Mount Doom. Gollum reappears and attacks Frodo, finally realizing that the goal of the quest has been to destroy his precious Ring. Sam holds him off long enough for Frodo to reach the Cracks of Doom. When the time comes to actually give up the Ring, Frodo cannot do it. Instead, he claims it for his own and puts it on. Instantly, Sauron sees what has happened and sends all of his power toward the mountain, including the remaining Nazgûl. Gollum is faster, however, and he struggles with Frodo on the edge of the pit. When he wrests the Ring from Frodo’s hand, Gollum dances for joy and accidentally falls into the volcano, inadvertently achieving what Frodo could not do intentionally.

Frodo and Sam are rescued by the giant eagles from the slopes of the mountain, and Aragorn himself tends their injuries. The world hails them as heroes for destroying the Ring and Sauron. Aragorn takes the throne of Gondor and marries Arwen, the daughter of Elrond. Eventually, the hobbits return home to the Shire. When they arrive, they find that the country is not the green and peaceful land they remember. A form of martial government has been instituted, and many people have been thrown into prison while others have cut down trees and polluted the countryside. Merry, Pippin, and Sam lead a revolt to reclaim the Shire, and they learn that the cause of this devastation is Saruman. Released by Treebeard, the former wizard has exacted his revenge by bringing the war home to the hobbits.

Despite the ravages of Saruman’s rule, the hobbits manage to restore the Shire to its former glory. Merry, Pippin, and Sam become prominent citizens, but Frodo remains detached and saddened, permanently damaged by his experiences with the Ring. Several years after his return home, he takes a final journey. Joining Elrond, Galadriel, Gandalf, and even Bilbo, Frodo sails with the elves to the Undying Lands, having saved the Shire for others but unable to stay there himself. Sam returns to his family in the Shire, saddened by Frodo’s departure but happy with the life he has made for himself.

The dark knight

Summary

The criminals of Gotham City are running scared, because Batman is keeping the good citizens of Gotham safe. The film opens with a gang of men wearing clown masks breaking into the bank where the mob keeps much of their money. The mastermind of the heist is someone named the Joker. At the end of the heist, Joker arrives and puts a grenade in the mouth of the bank manager.

Unaware of the Joker’s presence in their city, Batman and the new DA, Harvey Dent, are working alongside Lieutenant Gordon to put the last of the mob’s money-laundering enterprises out of business once and for all. They believe they have definitively stopped the laundering and crime in the city. Joker assassinates a judge, plants a bomb in a hospital and blows it up, and starts knocking off innocent people in Gotham one by one until Batman reveals his identity. Harvey adopts a new name, Two-Face, and Batman finds himself with two madmen to contend with as the destruction of Gotham looms large. Batman is determined to fight back against the Joker. Harvey is still on the Joker’s side, something that Batman did not realize in his haste to take down the Joker himself. While Batman has been confronting Joker, Gordon learns that his family has been taken hostage by Two-Face. When Gordon goes to save them, Two-Face knocks Gordon to the ground, then grabs his little boy, Jimmy. Suddenly, Batman arrives and orders him to stop, telling him that he is blaming the wrong people for Rachel’s death. Two-Face then flips the coin for Batman. It lands dirty side up, so he shoots him. He flips it for himself. It lands clean side up. Then he resumes with his original plan and flips it for little Jimmy. In the definitive moment, Batman gets up and tackles Two-Face, knocking him over a ledge. Batman decides to take the blame for the murders that Dent committed as Two-Face, so that the Joker can’t win and the city will stay peaceful.

Gordon is seen destroying the Bat symbol above the MCU building and then begins to chase Batman, who runs. Gordon tells his son that although Dent was the hero that Gotham needed, Batman is the hero that Gotham deserves. A manhunt is issued for Batman and he speeds away in his Batpod. Gordon declares, «He’s a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.»

Inception

Summary

A man named Dom Cobb wakes up on a shore and is dragged into a house belonging to a wealthy Japanese businessman named Mr. Saito. Cobb’s partner Arthur appears, and together they explain to Saito that new dream-sharing technology has rendered thoughts vulnerable to theft, advertising their security services to Saito as dream-sharing experts. After Saito leaves, Cobb steals documents from a safe upstairs. Cobb shoots and kills Arthur, who wakes up in an apartment, where Cobb and Saito are revealed still to be asleep and dreaming. As the dream in Saito’s mansion collapses, all of the men wake up in the apartment. Saito reveals that he set up the operation as an audition, and the men wake up again in a moving train.

Later, in Kyoto, Saito then asks Cobb whether he can perform «inception.» Saito tells Cobb that if he can plant an idea in the mind of his business rival, Robert Fischer, he can reunite Cobb with his children in the United States. Against Arthur’s judgment, Cobb consents to the plan and travels to Paris to find a dream «architect.» Cobb’s father-in-law Stephen Miles introduces him to Ariadne, a graduate student skilled in creating labyrinths.

Cobb introduces Ariadne to the basic rules and terms of dream-sharing technology, such as a «totem». Later Cobb and Ariadne descend into a fourth layer of the dream: a crumbling cityscape that Cobb and Mal built together in the fifty years they spent in «limbo.» Cobb confesses to Ariadne that he «incepted» the idea in Mal that limbo was not real, so that she would agree to wake up and be with their children. Mal continued to believe that reality was a dream, and eventually committed suicide, leaving Cobb ridden with guilt. In a nearby building, Ariadne and Cobb find Mal and Robert, whom Ariadne wakes up so that he can infiltrate the fortress’s «strong room.» Cobb tells Mal that she is not real, and Robert inputs a code in the strong room that reveals a large operating room with his dying father inside. Robert’s father tells him to live his own life, rendering the inception complete. As the dreamworld collapses, Cobb tells Ariadne to ride the «kicks» up through the layers of the dream while he rescues Saito. Cobb arrives in the United States and is greeted by Stephen Miles, who takes him to his children. Cobb arrives home and goes outside to play with his children, while his totem continues to spin.

George OrwellAnimal Farm

Summary

Old Major a prize-winning boar, gathers the animals of the Manor Farm for a meeting in the big barn. He tells them of a dream he has had in which all animals live together with no human beings to control them. He tells the animals that they must work toward such a paradise and teaches them a song called “Beasts of England”.  His dream is lyrically described in this song. The animals greet Major’s vision with great enthusiasm. When he dies only three nights after the meeting, three younger pigs, Snowball, Napoleon and Squealer  formulate his main principles into a philosophy called Animalism. Late one night, the animals manage to defeat the farmer Mr. Jones in a battle. They rename the property Animal Farm and dedicate themselves to achieving Major’s dream. The cart-horse Boxer devotes himself to the prosperity of the farm.

At first, Animal Farm prospers. Snowball works at teaching the animals to read, and Napoleon takes a group of young puppies to educate them in the principles of Animalism. When Mr. Jones reappears to take back his farm, the animals defeat him again and take the farmer’s abandoned gun as a sign of their victory. As time passes, however, Napoleon and Snowball begin to struggle with each other for power and influence among the other animals. Snowball builds an electricity-generating windmill, but Napoleon solidly opposes the plan. At the meeting to vote on whether to take up the project, Snowball gives a enthusiastic speech, whereas Napoleon gives only a brief retort. Then he makes a strange noise, and nine dogs burst into the barn and chase Snowball from the farm. Napoleon assumes leadership of Animal Farm and declares that there will be no more meetings. He claims that the pigs alone will make all the decisions for the good of every animal.

Hovhannes Tumanian: The Dog and the Cat

“Have a look at that.
I’ve got no hat
And the winter’s near.
It’s all too bad;
I’ll freeze, I fear.
If it comes out nice,
I’ll pay any price.
What do you say?”

“Too bad,” said the dog, “too bad,
That you haven’t yet finished the hat.
But maybe you’ll tell me plain
When can I see you again?
I’m coming here not to chat,
But to get my hat, Mr. Cat!”

Interstellar

Summary

The year is 2067, and the lack of crop and dust storms have devastated humanity. We meet Cooper, a widower, engineer, and former NASA pilot. He lives with his father-in-law, Donald and his two kids. They are Tom, and his 10-year-old daughter, Murph.

A terrible dust storm leaves patterns on Murph’s bedroom floor. Murph thinks a ghost has created them, but Cooper realizes the patterns have been made by gravity variations. Then he thinks that they represent geographic coordinates in binary code. Cooper and Murph follow the coordinates to a secret NASA facility headed by Professor John Brand, whom Cooper knows from his past life working at NASA.

Forty-eight years ago unknown beings placed a wormhole near Saturn, opening a path to a distant galaxy with 12 habitable worlds located near a huge black hole named Gargantua. Twelve volunteers travelled through the wormhole to survey the planets, and three of them Dr. Mann, Laura Miller and Wolf Edmunds reported positive results.

Brand presents them with two plans to ensure humanity’s survival. The first plan involves developing an antigravitational propulsion theory to direct settlements into space. The second plan involves launching the spacecraft carrying 5,000 frozen human embryos to settle on a habitable planet. Then other humans will follow.

Cooper is one of the only pilots left on Earth who can complete a mission like the second plan. So he decides to lead the charge, leaving his family behind. Dr. Amelia Brand (Prof. Brand’s daughter), Dr. Doyle, and Romilly are going to leave with him. Before leaving, Cooper gives Murph his watch to set the time when he will return. She’s so sad that she doesn’t even say goodbye to her father.

What happens on the water planet?

The wormhole takes the crew to Miller’s planet. Every hour on the planet equals seven Earth years. Romilly remains aboard the spaceship to research Gargantua, while Cooper, Doyle, and Brand descend in a landing craft to investigate the water planet for one hour. The group finds Miller’s shipwreck just before a giant wave kills Doyle.

Cooper and Brand barely survive, and their delayed departure results in reaching the spaceship 23 years later in Earth time, though only a few hours for them.

What happens to Cooper’s family?

Back aboard, Cooper has to watch videos to catch up on what’s happened in the 23 years he left earth. Seeing his kids grow, his father-in-law die, and even getting some grandkids. His son has become a farmer like his father-in-law. His daughter now works at NASA like him. They’re both doing their best to figure out what life is like without a dad.

Cooper and his crew are forced to travel to Mann’s planet where they revive him from cryostasis.

Cooper intends to return to Earth to be with his daughter, while Brand and Romilly will remain on Mann’s planet for permanent habitation. But in a big twist, Mann reveals that he sent falsified data to be rescued—the planet is not fit for human life. He attempts to kill Cooper and then steals a lander and heads for Endurance. Romilly is killed by a booby trap. Brand and Cooper pursue Mann in another lander.

Cooper and the robot TARS actually jettison from the rocket to shed weight and then direct Endurance to reach Edmunds’ planet. In turn, Cooper and TARS land inside a massive four-dimensional space called a tesseract.

As he drifts, Cooper sees through the bookcases of Murph’s old bedroom and weakly interacts with its gravity, realizing he was Murph’s «ghost.» He sent the coordinates.

Dead Poets Society

Summary

The film won Best Original Screenplay, thanks to its writer Tom Schulman, who had little reputation until he wrote Dead Poets Society.

The story is about a teacher named Mr. Keating who has come to all-boys school. That school was full of strict tradition. Keating’s unconventional methods helped the boys regard their individual identity and desires with his lessons from literature and poetry.

John Keating is the energetic English teacher who inspires the students of Welton Academy to rebel against their families and other teachers. His name echoes that of John Keats, the famous English Romantic poet whose celebration of life and originality may have inspired Keating’s own. Keating begins teaching at Welton in 1959 and immediately makes an impression on his students, who aren’t used to such exciting, fascinating lessons. Keating urges his students to “seize the day”—that is, do extraordinary, original things instead of merely imitating their teachers and parents. His example inspires the students to revive a secret society of which Keating was once a member—the Dead Poets Society. When his students begin to fight back against the Welton administration, Keating tries to convince his students to be more reserved and cautious in their behavior. He makes Neil Perry speak to his father about his love. After Neil’s tragic suicide Keating is blamed for “corrupting” his students, and fired from Welton.

Todd is a new student at Welton, having transferred from another, less prestigious school. He didn’t get along with his parents, who loved his elder brother, Jeffrey Anderson. At Welton, Todd was at first quiet and shy, but with the encouragement of John Keating and friendship of Neil Perry, his roommate, he learnt to express his feelings, and compose impressive poetry.

Neil Perry is a popular student at Welton. As Todd ’s roommate, Neil inspired Todd to be more confident. For his own part, Neil was afraid of his father and wanted to rebel against his family. Neil thought that John Keating was his model for rebellion. Neil decided to become an actor, and take part in a school Shakespeare production. When Mr. Perry fond out the truth, he was so furious with Neil that Neil shot himself with his father’s revolver. He was sure that his family would  never support his dreams.
